These are pictures from our test sailing session back in November 2010. You may have seen them already on Flickr but until recently we weren't able to share these images on this blog in an easy way. Over the next couple of days we will play catch up and start sharing all the images from the test session back in November of 2010. All the pictures were taken sailing in front of the Larchmont Yacht Club in NY.

On a beautiful Fall day November 2010, Nis and Lincoln were sailing the Scandinavian Dory 18. The SD18 Is a very versatile boat that is suitable for single-handed or double and sailing as well as single-handed or double and rowing. This particular boat was one of the first three Dories ever built by Scandinavian Cruisers. As you can see by the wrinkles in the mainsail the mast that originally came with this boat was too soft. Shortly after new much stiffer carbon fiber masts were sent out to cor

Two weeks ago many people took advantage of our offer to go test sailing with us at the Larchmont Yacht Club in New York. We had both the SC20 and the SD18 available to try out. And as you can see in the photos we had some beautiful days and some really good wind.See also videos here, here and here.

The Scandinavian Dory 18 is without a doubt the most versatile boat we have in our offering. A beautiful classic lapstrike design that can be both sailed as well as rowed. Use it as an exercise rowing boat or go sailing with some family members and have a picnic. The SD18 does it all. We have added two spacious storage compartments. The one in the bow is even insulated so you can bring cold drinks.

The full length battens are "bamboo sticks" so the sail is a little wrinkled as they we sewn in by hand. We now use a lead weighted swinging centerboard and water ballast. In sailing mode the boat tracks very well and it feels more like a keelboat than a dinghy. I could leave the rudder alone and go forward while the boat kept going. The rudder is very powerful. It is very long and narrow boat, and when the breeze picks up the speed goes up quite well.

The boat has excellent stability, speed and tracking for recreational rowing, great rowing exercise or club racing. It can be rowed either in a single sliding-seat setup or a double fixed-seat arrangement, and has a large self-draining cockpit, carbon fiber oars, Concept II oar locks, stainless steel outriggers, racing seats, and built in oar storage holes.

The weather in Xiamen, China was sunny and warm as it seems to be each time we come here to sail. We started out by rowing the Scandinavian Dory 18 in the single rowing and sliding seat set-up, with my wife and son as passengers and acting as my “eyes” looking forward from the stern. The boat is exceptionally stable in rowing mode, and two people can easily change positions by walking past each other rather than one climbing through the legs of the other person.

We are very excited to inform you that we now have two boats in the race for the Newport for New Products 2010 Award. This year we've launched our first two boats, the Scandinavian Cruiser 20 and the Scandinavian Dory 18 and to have both nominated for this award is more than had hoped for. The SC20 and the SD18 combine classical design and sailing (and rowing) ability with the latest building technologies and hi-tech materials. If you are looking for a classic boat but are not willing to...
