During the many boatshows we have been to, we heard mostly two things. People with small boats dreaming about owning large yachts and people who own large yachts wishing they could return to the way sailing was taught to them...sailing small dinghies. Less hassle and more sailing pleasure. When we set out to launch the Scandinavian Cruisers line of boats we envisioned to: "Recapture the Essence of Sailing!".
On a beautiful Fall day November 2010, Nis and Lincoln were sailing the Scandinavian Dory 18. The SD18 Is a very versatile boat that is suitable for single-handed or double and sailing as well as single-handed or double and rowing. This particular boat was one of the first three Dories ever built by Scandinavian Cruisers. As you can see by the wrinkles in the mainsail the mast that originally came with this boat was too soft. Shortly after new much stiffer carbon fiber masts were sent out to cor

The Internet can be used by disgruntled people as a tool for revenge. This is a reality and we must accept it. We will respond professionally to all reasonable criticism, and reject any unfair attacks. We have witnessed an unfair attack on Scandinavian Cruisers, by our former distributor in Tampa, Florida, Jerry A. Twomey, Boat Fix USA, Inc. / Sailtime Tampa, Inc.
Beautiful shot of the SD18 on the Hudson river
The Scandinavian Dory 18 is without a doubt the most versatile boat we have in our offering. A beautiful classic lapstrike design that can be both sailed as well as rowed. Use it as an exercise rowing boat or go sailing with some family members and have a picnic. The SD18 does it all. We have added two spacious storage compartments. The one in the bow is even insulated so you can bring cold drinks.
Two weeks ago many people took advantage of our offer to go test sailing with us at the Larchmont Yacht Club in New York. We had both the SC20 and the SD18 available to try out. And as you can see in the photos we had some beautiful days and some really good wind.See also videos here, here and here.
As the popularity of the Scandinavian Dory 18 grows, so does her distribution. Here she is in Australia!
The Scandinavian Dory 18 is a "wolf in sheeps clothing". A brand new boat combining beautiful classic clinker/lapstrake dory lines with the latest high performance sailing and rowing functionality.
We will give away one SC20 book and one SD18 book among all of you who have commented or emailed us with constructive feedback.
The biggest sailboat show in about to start later this week. If you do not have plans yet for the upcoming weekend or if you're in the market for a new boat, this is the show to go to!
As you may have noticed the Newport International Boat Show has started this week and will run through this Sunday. The best weather is planned for Saturday and Sunday so if you haven't made any plans yet I would urge you to come and take a look. This year the show has some really interesting boats on display, among which a number of different daysailers is various shapes and sizes. I'll try and see if I can upload some pictures tomorrow.
The full length battens are "bamboo sticks" so the sail is a little wrinkled as they we sewn in by hand. We now use a lead weighted swinging centerboard and water ballast. In sailing mode the boat tracks very well and it feels more like a keelboat than a dinghy. I could leave the rudder alone and go forward while the boat kept going. The rudder is very powerful. It is very long and narrow boat, and when the breeze picks up the speed goes up quite well.
The boat has excellent stability, speed and tracking for recreational rowing, great rowing exercise or club racing. It can be rowed either in a single sliding-seat setup or a double fixed-seat arrangement, and has a large self-draining cockpit, carbon fiber oars, Concept II oar locks, stainless steel outriggers, racing seats, and built in oar storage holes.
The Best Boats for 2011: Hunter 18, Class 2M, Landing School 20, Marblehead 22, NorseBoat 21.5 Cruiser and the Scandinavian Cruiser 20 and the Scandinavian Cruiser Dory 18!
