The beauty, the expert and the novice.
To be honest my sailing experience is very limited... I have some fond memories of being on sailboats, navigating through the beautiful Swedish archipelago in my youth. But that is a very far cry from sailing the real way. So, fast forward a decade (or two) and my time has finally come!
This week Nis Peter Lorentzen and Haye Kesteloo teamed up in the stunning coastal community of Larchmont, New York to test sail the Scandinavian Cruiser 20 on the Long Island Sound. And with that, it was time for me to get on the boat and in the water! As I arrived both Nis and Haye were busy getting the boat ready and of course both of them looked the part of experienced, avid sailors. I on the other hand was dressed in my husband's old sailing jacket from the early 80's and in Haye's waterproof sailing pants. It should be said that Haye is 6'4" and I am a "towering" 5'7" - you do the math there! I looked like a mix between the Michelin man and a 4 year old in hand me downs! However I was guaranteed a dry sail which I very much appreciated.
In no time had Nis and Haye prepped the boat and we were ready to take off. I must say that I was very impressed with how easy she was to get in the water. Everything about this boat is brilliantly thought out so raising the mast, setting the sails and prepping her is a really quick thing.
As I stepped on to the boat I had the feeling that this was going to be an amazing experience. The conditions were perfect and as the wind filled the sails and Nis expertly maneuvered us around the harbor I knew that this was not going to be the last time I enjoyed the beauty and grace of the Scandinavian Cruiser 20 on the water. I admit that I know nothing about sailing, but I do appreciate quality and craftsmanship and the SC20 over delivers on both of those aspects. As we cruised along, Nis showcased his sailing expertise by turning and maneuvering the boat like a race car. I know I will never be as good a sailor as Nis of course, but quite frankly I don't think I need to be in order to thoroughly enjoy sailing the SC20. This boat is amazing, not only in her looks but also in her range and she really has something for pretty much every sailor out there! So thank you Nis for a great experience, you and the SC20 got me hooked on the sailing lifestyle!
